Butterscotch Caramel Candies

Here's another candy recipe from our catalog. If it sounds good to you, you'll love the candle.

¾ c sweetened condensed milk
2 c packed light brown sugar
1 c butter
½ tsp salt
1 c dark corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract

Cook all ingredients except vanilla to 240°. Add vanilla extract and cook
to 246°. Pour into a buttered tin 1 inch deep. Cut when cool and serve.

I'm Back!

Whew! October and November were CRAZY around my house, and my blank GC blog has been proof of that. Major cleaning and painting projects were going on so that I could host my very first Thanksgiving. The funky blue kitchen cabinets are gone, my livingroom is no longer dirty seafoam green, and I am now an expert with the blue painter tape. But now - a well-deserved break so that I can focus on myself, my family, and Gold Canyon. Let the Christmas season begin!!!

In addition to trying scent recipes, where you light several candles at once, mixing the fragrances together, why not try coordinating your scents from room to room? While one candle can scent more than one room, I like to light complimenting scents in several rooms, so that I have a new scent experience wherever I go. This works particularly well in my house, as my rooms tend to be on the larger side. Here's what I have going right now:

Coconut Pecan Brittle Recipe

Here's a great recipe to go along with Gold Canyon's new Coconut Pecan Brittle candle.

1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup pecans (chopped or whole)
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1 cup light corn syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 teaspooons baking soda

Bake coconut at 350* until lightly browned. Mix with pecans in bowl. Turn oven off and place two greased pans inside. In saucepan, mix sugar, salt and water until boiling and sugar is dissolved. Stir in corn syrup and return to a boil. Mix in coconut mixture. Stirring frequently, bring to 300*, and remove from heat. Immediately stir in vanilla and butter. Stir in baking soda. Immediately pour onto warm pans and spread. Cool completely, break and serve.

My Five Faves That Are Going Away

Here are the things I love that are out of here with the new Holiday catalog:

1. Lemon Bar. I've said it before and I'll say it again: LOVE IT! A member of the popular Baking Line, it's my favorite Gold Canyon candle. And it's only offered in our summer catalog, so I stock up every year.

2. Fem Fabulous. They smell fantastic and they come in an adorable jar.

3. Star-Spangled Votives. I can't tell you how many compliments I received regarding these. They're a great value, well made, and festive!

4. Citronella Nights. I wouldn't be caught without these in the summer. They smell FANTASTIC (not the usual icky citronella scent), and they really work!

5. Summer of Sun Surfer Girl. Effervescent, fresh, and in a cool retro container. Too cute!

Moving Tools

Well -- my husband and I just purchased our first house! We're very excited. It needs a TON of work, but it's got great bones. Unfortunately, it came with a lot of dirt, and some interesting smells. I may not be able to find all of my clothes, but I know exactly where my Gold Canyon boxes are at. Here are some of things I've dug out in the past two weeks that we've lived here:

1. Rosemary Mint All-Purpose Cleaner. Have I mentioned the house was dirty????? This cleaner has been a life saver. It cleans and helps with some of the odors left behind -- like cigar smoke.

2. Scent Pod Warmer. I love my central air. I do not love that the vents do crazy things with my candle flames. But I am not without my Gold Canyon fragrance. On my kitchen counter right now is the square pod warmer with the Moroccan Amber Vanilla pod from the Spring catalog. LOVE IT.

3. Fresh Orange Diffuser. The sunroom is large and now filled with fantastic fragrance.

4. Auto Fresheners. All of those guys who helped us out on moving day are getting auto fresheners in their thank you gifts (not to mention a candle for their wives).

Looney for Lemon Bar

My absolute, all-time favorite Gold Canyon candle EVER just happens to be our seasonal Lemon Bar fragrance. It's sweet and tart all at the same time, with that extra hint of shortbread crust in the background. As a part of the Baking Line, which has a burn time of 170 hours, I can enjoy it for a very long time. But don't worry -- I'm never out. I stock up in the Summer so that I can enjoy the fragrance all year long! They only last until August. Get yours while you still can!

Here's a FANTASTIC recipe for Lemon Bars. Try it out and tell me what you think!

Incredible Lemon Bars

Ingredients:

1 1/8 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup confectioners sugar

1/2 cup butter, softened

2 eggs

2/3 cup confectioners sugar

1/3 cup fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 tablespoon confectioners sugar

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, 1/3 cup of confectioners sugar, and butter until butter is in very small crumbs. Press into the bottom of an 11 x 7 inch pan.

2. Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until firm and lightly browned. While the crust is baking, whisk together the eggs, 2/3 cup of confectioners sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest in a medium bowl. Just before the crust is done, stir in the baking powder. Pour over the crust while it is hot, and return to the oven.

3. Bake for another 25 minutes, until set. Dust with remaining confectioners sugar when cool.

Once upon a time, an ambitious woman entered a successful store that had a reputation for its beauty and fine-quality merchandise. Scent Blending Recipes

Scent Blending Recipes are carefully selected recipes of individual candles that, when burned together, create their own unique blended scent.

To maximize your experience, follow the recipe carefully. Alterations will not make it as wonderful of a blend. First, arrange the candles on a heat-safe surface with the largest in the middle and the smaller surrounding it. Be sure to use a holder for votives and tealights. Place each candle approximately two inches apart in the arrangement. Finally, light each candle and allow the scents to mix for at least 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Cinco de Mayo and Citronella

It’s Cinco de Mayo! In honor of all of your outdoor parties, it’s time to focus on Citronella Nights. These candles are, without a doubt, the best smelling citronella candles on the market – mainly because they don’t smell like citronella! They come in two fantastic fragrances: Jasmine Lime and Papaya Passion. They're poured into a wide square jar, are double-wicked, and are poured to a lower level to avoid gusts of wind. And now they come in tealights! These are perfect for your patio parties, or scatter the tealights around your pool area for ambiance in addition to a bug-free zone. You may be tempted to burn these candles inside your home, but resist. They really do contain citronella, even though they don’t smell like it!

Tin Can Margaritas – My sister-in-law Rachel introduced this recipe to me. Watch out when you drink this one. It’ll knock your socks off!

Pour 1 can frozen limeade (thawed) into a pitcher. Fill the can with Tequila and pour it in. Fill the can half-way with Triple Sec and fill the other half with lemon juice and pour it in. Mix well and serve in salt/sugar-rimmed glass over ice. Garnish with lime wedge.

Enchiladas – This is my mother-in-law Beverly’s recipe, and you will never have better enchiladas. It may be long and involved, but it’s really worth it! The different parts can be made in advance and put together the day of your party.

Heat oven to 350*

Tortillas:
1 c. all-purpose flour
½ c. yellow corn meal
½ teaspoon salt
1 2/3 c. milk
1 egg
2 teaspoons melted butter

Combine flour, cornmeal and salt in mixing bowl. Add milk and egg and melted butter. Beat until smooth. Heat skillet over medium heat. For each tortilla, pour 3 tablespoons batter into skillet. Immediately rotate pan to spread the batter. Cook until light brown; turn and brown on other side. Stack between waxed paper until ready to use.

Meat:
2 tablespoons butter
½ c. chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 lb. ground chuck
2 c. water
1 teaspoon oregano
½ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cumin

Melt butter in skillet; sauté onion and garlic. Add meat and brown. Drain off excess fat. Add water, oregano, salt & cumin. Simmer until liquid is almost evaporated (about 45 minutes).

Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
½ c. chopped onion
1 can crushed tomatoes (1 lb., 12 oz.)
1 can condensed tomato soup (10 ¾ oz.)
1 can tomato sauce (8 oz.)
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
¼ c. butter

Melt butter in skillet; sauté onion. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato soup & sauce, chili powder, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until reduced by 1/3 (approx. 45 minutes). Strain. Add sugar and butter. Stir until butter melts. Remove cinnamon stick.

Additional enchilada ingredients:
2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
1 c. chopped Spanish onion
black olives
parsley

To assemble enchiladas:
Divide the meat, 1 c. shredded cheese, and chopped onions among the 12 tortillas; roll. Place in buttered 13x9 pan. Pour tomato sauce over. Bake 15 minutes or until heated through. Top with remaining cheese and bake until melted (approx. 5 minutes). Garnish with olives and parsley.

It’s Earth Day, and I’m celebrating the fabulous Eco-Shopper. It’s big, it’s sturdy, and it’s attractive. LOVE the color and the adorable flowers. These bags stand out in a crowd! Gold Canyon on the Road

Whew! I just finished a whirlwind trip. I was in Columbus, Ohio, doing a candle party for my fab sister-in-law Amanda, then up to Warren, Ohio, to have a party for my mom! Lots of miles on the car, lots of new faces, and TONS of fun. LOVED seeing my beautiful niece Bella and my adorable nephew James. Check out some pictures from my weekend. It was a blast!
